The decompression solenoid can act up on the V2K. It is easy to check it, view this link (warning 6.8 mb .avi file) for where it is (pic below), and what it acts like when messing up.

The decomp solenoid should only trigger as the bike starts, then let off. Sometimes they will also stick, which leaves the exhaust valves slightly open, which can sound like a backfire. If solenoid is down, but lever is still in, it is stuck. A little machine oil fixes it quick.
